AlphaTrack and Pro Tools

Recording and editing in Pro Tools has taken a giant step forward in the form of a surprisingly small package. AlphaTrack is a compact control surface that fits comfortably in the smallest workspaces, yet provides a set of intuitive features that defy its size. The AlphaTrack controller isn’t just easy to use — spend just a little time with AlphaTrack, and it’s easy to forget how you used to get the job done without it.

AlphaTrack has the basics covered with standard features like transport controls, track and marker navigation, loop and punch-in mode control, undo, redo and more. But AlphaTrack’s customized HUI emulation mode gives Pro Tools users many additional special features that challenge far more expensive hardware controllers. Touch-sensitive encoders linked to the built in LCD display, and dedicated mode buttons, give you instant access to Track, Send, EQ, Plug-In, and Automation parameter settings. AlphaTrack’s unique touch-strip provides built-in scrub and shuttle modes for fast editing and project navigation. These special features aren’t an accident. They’re the result of a dedicated effort by Frontier Design Group to develop the best products available for Pro Tools users.

Setting up Pro Tools for use with AlphaTrack is quick and easy. Once the drivers are installed and AlphaTrack is set to ‘ProTools (HUI)’, open Pro Tools and add a HUI to your MIDI Controllers panel. Select AlphaTrack as the Send and Receive MIDI device, and you’re done! AlphaTrack can work in conjunction with other control surfaces but you should consult your Pro Tools manual for details regarding any possible limitations.

Pro Tools and AlphaTrack

The Frontier Design Group website includes three documents with information specifically for Pro Tools users.

The first, Pro Tools Guide, contains detailed instructions for configuring AlphaTrack with Pro Tools, and also has information about how to use some of AlphaTrack’s advanced features, and a reference chart listing the controls for Pro Tools.

The second file, Pro Tools Layout, is a single page picture of the AlphaTrack controller with overlaid text summarizing the Pro Tools feature set. It may be helpful to print the file and have it handy as a quick reference guide.

The third file, Pro Tools Control Surfaces and AlphaTrack, provides information about using other Pro Tools control surfaces along with AlphaTrack. In addition to reading this document, we recommend that you also consult your Pro Tools manual for details regarding any possible limitations.

We encourage visitors to our user forums to post their comments and questions. Other users often have useful ideas and experiences to share, and we monitor the posts to provide additional input.
