I'm using the AlphaTrack in PT M-Powered 7.3 under XP Home using the v1.2 driver. When writing volume automation by riding the fader I notice that if I move the fader back and forth for small adjustments (within 1-2 dB) I sometimes get large spikes in my resulting automation curve -- almost as if I had jerked it up several dB (4 or more) and back. This might imply a sensitivity to velocity. I just go in and delete those spikes to compensate. My system is grounded and the AT is plugged into a motherboard USB port.

Any comments?

Thanks.

CS:Hello Kelp,

No, AlphaTrack isn't velocity sensitive and should move quite smoothly. I'm not sure if ProTools has any MIDI resolution adjustment that could affect this but you can also try performing the calibration routine on your AT. Just press Shift+Stop+F4 and release for a moment.

Hi,

I consider buying the TranzPort but liked to check a couple of thing before the decision:

1. Does the TranzPort work with /support the Logic 5.5.1/PC version?

2. Can I choose and delete recorded tracks with the TranzPort interface?
In my workflow the very basic feature is that I record->listen->delete/accept
the recorded track.  Can I point the track and delete it without going to my
keyboard and mouse ( = does the TranzPort include some kind of mouse pointer +
    deleting function button?).

Harry

CS:Hello Harry,

Sorry no, Logic 5 only supports a very limited set of controllers and won't talk to the TranzPort natively. It may be possible to use a program like Bome's MIDI Translator to set up template for it but I haven't tried it myself. Logic started officially supporting TranzPort with version 7.0.1.

Because there is no standard set of MIDI commands that all recording applications support, the TranzPorts capabilities vary from one program to the next.  For instance, TranzPort may be able to add or delete tracks in Sonar but not in ProTools. Some programs just don't expose all of their controls to external control.

TranzPort can select tracks for recording and a number of other functions but doesn't have a 'mouse pointer' ability.

I hope this helps answer your questions.

CS:Hello Luke,
Let check a few things out before we go for the RMA, just to make sure there isn't something missing in the puzzle.

You mentioned that the icon appears when you connect the AlphaTrack. This means that the drivers are likely installed and working fine, and that the computer is seeing it on the USB bus. It is normal for the display to show "AlphaTrack" for a few seconds then go dark until an application (Nuendo) communicates with it. You should also right-click on the icon and confirm that it is in 'Native' mode for Nuendo.

Next, launch Nuendo and lets check out your Device Setup panel. You should have added a device called "Frontier AlphaTrack" to the list. If not, click the '+' symbol in the upper left corner and select it from the list that appears. Once the device is added, use the menu on the right to set the MIDI Input and Output to "AlphaTrack" as well.

At this point it should be working. If not, let us know if any of these details did not appear as expected. For instance, if the AlphaTrack did not appear in the Device Setup menu, or in the MIDI port list. Any clues are good clues.

In earlier versions of PT you could just CTRL+Click on a track with the mouse and PT would move the external control focus there as well. In recent versions of ProTools however, Digidesign has changed this feature to 'Shift+CTRL+Click', or 'Shift+right-click'. Hope that helps.

Sounds like Logic got its MIDI setup preps confused when you switched off the other MIDI interface. Try going to Logic/Prefs/MIDI and hit the Reset MIDI Ports.

I am running Sonar 7 Producer on Vista, and after installing the Alphatrack patch from both the CD and the website, I cannot find the AlphaTrack.dll file the user's guide refers to anywhere.  It says it should be "inside the Program Files\Cakewalk\ Shared Surfaces folder where SONAR is installed on your computer." but I could not find it there after running the driver install that should have placed it.  I tried searching my computer for it, but searching for the AlphaTrack.dll file with the search function only turned up the user guide itself.
When I turn on Sonar, the AlphaTrack sends midi signals that my soft synth responds to(as high pitched notes), but after assigning it in the options/controller surfaces box in Sonar, it will not do anything it is supposed to.  I would really rather not try and re-map each function, since I have no experience with that, and I am assuming the AlphaTrack.dll file will plug-in the control functions for me anyway, but for some reason the driver install is not loading it where it should.
I have tried looking for it as a stand-alone download, but if it is here anywhere I am missing it.  Any thoughts?

Hello abaraxadac,

When you first ran the AlphaTrack installer, there is a page where you can check boxes to select specific application plug-ins to be added. These include Cubase, Nuendo, Audition, and Sonar. I would disconnect the AlphaTrack and rerun the installer, making sure to check the Sonar box when it is shown. This should but the .dll file in the correct location. Ifyou are mixing 32-bit Sonar with 64-bit Vista then let us know as there is a special method to do this.

Once the 'dll file is in the correct location then you should find "Frontier AlphaTrack" as an option in the first column of the Control Surface setup.

Abaraxadac wrote:

I knew about the box to check, this particular install package makes it obvious, and I had done that.  I decided to try installing just the plug-in from the CD once I realized that you could uncheck the box next to the driver on the same page- this was after I had turned off my comp for the day and came back to it the next.  I do not know if restarting the computer or installing just the plug-in did the trick, but I found the file in the correct folder, while not running Sonar.  The instructions just say to restart Sonar, but maybe the comp needed it also.
In addition, when I opened up the "import ACT data" window from the options\controllers/surfaces page, it did not list the file at first.  I had to hit the drop down menu for file type, and change the selection to all file types to see it.
Then, when it still didn't work, I figured out that I needed to have my controller highlighted in blue by selecting it with the mouse in the options\controllers/surfaces page before I loaded the ACT data.
The controller promptly started working fine, and I realized that all my pitches were off from me messing with the thing while not having it configured properly.
Hope this helps the next guy..

Abe.

CS:Since Cakewalk added ACT to SONAR the Control Surface setup defaults to ACT as the Controller type. It is important that you click on this menu and change it to Frontier AlphaTrack (or TranzPort if that is what you have) as well as set the MIDI In /Out settings to itself as well. Glad to hear you're up and running.

CS:Hello Tomc11,

If you are turning the keyboard controller on after Logic is already running then you are probably just confusing it. Try turning it on and then hitting the 'Reset MIDI Ports' option in your Logic MIDI Prefs. Logic should be fine with both devices on together.

CS

tomc11 wrote:

The above really doesn't appear to work. When I go to the utility program 'Audio/Midi Setup' on OSX 10.4 the screen shows both the AlphaTrack and the Keyboard, I do a Rescan Midi then run the Test Setup. The keyboard sends out a note however the AlphaTrack issues nothing.
I'm trying to find some way of setting each item to a different midi port (1 and 2). This setup program doesn't appear to allow me to change the values of the port. They are both showing as port 1 for Midi Out. Right now the Alphatrack buttons issue sounds from whatever instrument is on the selected track (only if the keyboard is on).

CS: The settings in Audio/MIDI Setup shouldn't be a problem. I really suspect it is just confusion within Logic itself caused by changing or adding MIDI devices on the fly. Go to Logic/Preferences/Control Surfaces/Setup and highlight the icon for AlphaTrack. In the parameter list on the left be sure that the MIDI in and out ports for AlphaTrack are both set to itself. Or you can delete the AlphaTrack icon entirely and  then close and relaunch Logic. That will force Logic to reconstruct its internal profile for the AT.

CS:Hello adavis,

your initial symptom sounds like Logic's profile for ALphaTrack got corrupted. The fix for that, as well as getting Logic to stop flagging the AlphaTrack when disconnected is the same.

Go to Logic/Preferences/Control Surfaces/Setup. Highlight the AlphaTrack icon there and delete it. Close Logic and relaunch it. NOw when you add AlphaTrack back in it will force Logic to reconstruct its profile for the device, including the MIDI port assignments which is what was probably messed up.

I've even had a friend of mine (who's an electrician) come out to check my electrical. It checked out fine. I also uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, but no luck.

The latest thing I DID notice was that when I plug in a flash drive next to the Alphatrack (there are 2 USB ports on the front of the computer), the Alpatrack shuts off. Maybe a power supply (computer) problem????

CS:Hello Jason,

power on the USB bus can very definitely be a problem. Some models of computer provide the full spec power (500ma) to all USB ports but many split it up between some, or all, or their ports. This means that shortages can occur when you least expect it. If you have a powered USB hub handy to test with, try connecting that (with its own power connected of course) in between the AT and the computer. Let us know if that helps.

Thanks a bunch for the response! I think I figured out the problem. I changed the knob on the fader, and it must have desensitized the touch response of the fader, and the alphatrack was freaking out.

CS:Ah yes, that will do it. The fader and encoder caps are all coated with a touch-sensitive surface. Without that it won't know what is going on when the fader is being moved. If you have an earlier AlphaTrack, there is another style if 'grippier' caps available for a minimal fee. Just give our office a call.

CS:Hello rdaltry,

The symptom you are describing may actually be buried in Windows code rather than the Dakota driver side. Win XP changed how many of the Sound and Audio control panel functions work from earlier versions. The Volume setting for instance, has been completely disabled for any add-on sound cards. However, in most cases these settings will have no affect on how the Dakota (or any other sound card) work with your actual DAW software. They may affect WMP though. But can you tell us what recording software you are using? Perhaps we can give a bit more detail.

CS

rdaltry wrote:

I use Sawstudio + Midiworkshop from RML labs for recording and WMP to play many file types. The first problem I'm trying to work through is with WMP. It is playing all files (even MIDI files), but even though I can see the MIDI files play on the progress bar, I can't hear the output. That's what lead me to Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Audio Tab -> MIDI Music Playback - > Default Device -> Volume button.
I did notice in the Dakota Control Panel -> Clock/Device Status Tab -> Digital Output Status, that Device S 1:2 was linked to Opt A. So I removed that link. The result was that when Frontier PCI WDM Interface Device is enabled, Mixer Device for MIDI audio output is forced to Dakota A 1:2 and cannot be changed from that setting.
I tried the checkbox to Disable S/PDIF in WDM on the Dakota Control Panel System tab. Rebooted the PC, but still the Mixer Device for MIDI audio output is locked to Dakota A 1:2.
I tried Sound and Audio Devices Properties -> Hardware -> Frontier PCI WDM Interface  - > Properties - > Properties Tab -> Mixer devices -> Frontier PCI -> Properties, and selected 'Do not use Mixer features on this device' button. It appears that is in someway hardlinked to the same setting on the SoundMAX integrated digital audio device in that, any change made for the  Frontier device, forces the same change for the SoundMAX device.
This problem is completely eliminated, and I can again hear the output of WMP when playing MIDI files if I open Device Manager -> Sound, Video and Game Controllers, and Disable Frontier PCI WDM Interface.
If I then re-enable Device Manager -> Sound, Video and Game Controllers -> Frontier PCI WDM Interface, I can hear WMP play MIDI files and actually make use of Dakota. Upon reboot though, all the settings return to thier problem state. This leads me to believe this is fixable without having to wrestle with Device Manager after every power on.

CS:Hello Tom,

check out the 'Flip' function on page 9 of the Logic Guide (http://frontierdesign.com/download/pdf/ … T_v1.1.pdf). While we can't control specific cc values, any function that is accessible via an encoder can be flipped to the fader for more detailed control.

Thanks for your reply.

I have since figured out a workaround. You can automate any midi control data if you do a bit of work in Logic's environment.

1. Create a regular instrument (midi)
2. Process this through a transformer object (midi monitors are your friend here)
3. As input select volume (cc7), as output choose what you wish to control (cc11 or custom control number for cell crossfade or filter control etc)
4. Cable the transformer to the audio instrument you wish to control

Now, when this midi instrument is selected in the arrange page, you can automate any midi data with all the functionality normally reserved for track automation only.

Unfortunately this will work for only 2 parameters per instrument as only pan and volume show up on the Alphatrack as automatable parameters for midi instruments.

Until Logic allows track automation to control basic midi cc's, we will have to deal with this slightly more messy approach. Of course once you've set up your detailed template you can use the hide show option to clean up the arrange page.

(It might be handy to post this as a tip for people who wish to have motorised control over software or hardware that is linked through midi control only. Of course this applies to Logic only, but the principle might be applicable in other hosts and people can post their methods)

Hi --

I just purchased a beautiful new Intel Mac, and am in the process of getting my transport installed. I got the mackie control mode to work, but I'd like the improved functionality of using it in native mode. Problem is, when I try to open the downloaded bundle, an error message tells me there's no program that can open the .bundle extension.

Granted, I'm pretty unfamiliar with Macs, but it seems there's no way for me to open the file that's written specifically for Macs. I'm sure I'm just missing something, but if anyone could help me out I'd appreciate it.

Ken

CS:Hello Ken,

Actually, there is no need to open the .bundle file. It is meant to be placed into your Cubase application just as it is (you would need special coding software to open it). Simply follow the Setup instructions in the "CubaseSX/Nuendo 3-4 Guide" for TranzPort and you should be good-to-go.

I'm having 2 problems with my Alphatrack.....

1) Although its supposed to enable me to use all buttons on tracks selected i.e. if on track 2, control 2, if on 16 then control 16.

Regardless to what track I select, it only applies to Audio Track 2 !!! Why is that?

2) When I touch the slider or the touch sensitive knobs, the display goes berserk.

Please help.

Thanks

CS:Hello D'Star,

What application are you using it with?
Desktop or laptop computer?

The slider/display goes berserk symptom sounds like either a general poor grounding issue, or you're using Logic with the default Apple plug-in, which doesn't work properly. If the latter, then you should download the Logic plug-in update from our website and replace the Apple version.

Let us know and we'll be glad to help.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. However, while waiting for your reply I managed to resolve the problem.

Within the Logic Control Surface set up, there is an option for track. Do not misunderstand that his option and tick it "lock". The Alpha will lock and only work with the channel it was selected on when option of "lock" was selected. Make sure it is always left "unticked".

I have not used my Tranaport for a couple of weeks. When I went to use it both green/link lights on the unit and the USB interface were lit, but I got nothing on the unit screen(blank except when I hit battery check it shows the batt level-batteries are new) and it is not able to control anything in ProTools as it has in the past. Any trouble shooting pointers would be greatly appreciated. Also, recently we installed a whole bunch of lighting around the house and needed to flip power switches on and off...could that have effected the unit?

CS:Hello Diamond,

If you are seeing the link LEDs light up then I would suspect that your TranzPort is fine and maybe the problem is just a setting in ProTools or the TranzPort mode setting. It would be correct for the display to be blank if anything has changed there.

First, open the Tranzport taskbar icon (PC, or TranzPort Manager (Mac) and confirm that it is set to "ProTools (HUI)" mode.

Next, open ProTools and go to the Setup/Periferals/Midi Controllers panel and confirm that your settings are still correct. For the TranzPort you should have 'Type' set to HUI, and both 'Send To' and 'Receive From' set to Frontier TranzPort.

That's really all there is to it.
Let us know if you are still having any trouble.

I found a post from 2007 on this topic but it seemed inconclusive. It looks like F4 and SHIFT+FLIP are both programmed to a Nuendo function called "Edit." However, nothing happens when I try either. Does this work in N3?

Thanks.

CS:Hey Kelp,

Shift+Flip by default should open the Channel Editor panel for the selected track. If the default has been changed you can go back to the AlphaTrack panel in your Device Manager and reset it to this, or any other command that you like. F4 defaults to Undo, or Redo with Shift. It can also be changed to suit.

I'd like to use the EQ button on the AT to switch between the two eq? how can I do this?

CS:Hi Patrick,

Well, the EQ mode function of the AT can't toggle between 2 EQ's on the same track. It will grab the first one every time. However, if you switch to PLUG-IN mode you can select a specific insert and edit the second EQ. Obviously the parameters aren't arranged the same way in this mode though.

Sorry, but that's the best I can offer you.

CS:Hello Roland,

I believe the answer is yes. Logic treats controllers completely independently from each other. I am not certain what feature differences there might be between Logic and Logic Express. You might search these forums for 'Logic Express' for any other clues.

I have had the TranzPort for some time now and it has worked on all 3 macs without problems.  However, now the TranZport will not work on my G5 since I updated the system software to 10.4.11.  On my other 2 macs, it still works fine.
Here's the breakdown:
G5:  OS 10.4.11   Tranzport Version 1.4.2,   Itunes: 7.6.2  Performer 5.0 bundle version 1.04.  Neither iTunes or Performer will work and the Frontier Manger says TranzPort not available.  Also, the lights on both the USB receiver and the TranzPort are lit continuously.  Also the Manager Menu disappears as soon as I try to reinitialize it.  I've de-installed and re-installed both the TranzPort software and the Performer driver two times.  Still nothing works.  Both G4 powrbooks run everything fine.  One uses the old 10.3.9 and the newest one is using 10.4.9 OS and TranzPort version 1.3.0 and Performer plug in bundle 1.04.  Can anyone help me with this?

CS:Hello Ken,

The TranzPort should be fine with OS10.4.11. Since you just updated the OS though I would begin by repairing permissions on that machine. The fact that your Link LED's are lit but the Manager says 'Not Available' seems like file troubles. Disconnect the TranzPort and run the "Tranzport Remover", then go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utilities, select your system drive and 'Repair Permissions'. After a restart run the "TranzPort Installer" again and then reconnect.

Let us know how you make out.
