I've just bought the mixer yesterday and I cannot get it to work them together. I've read both manuals and can't find a solution. I think that I have to slave the mixer to the wavecenter to use it for playback but  I don't know how (never had a digital mixer before :p). And in case I set both devices for playback , do I have to to make changes every time I have to record a vocal track for example? Can I monitor a track from the pc and record a vocal line into at the same time? Please explain me wih details (newbie here :p). Thanx in advance.

CS:Hello Rusty,

I can find very little detailed information on the M10-DX on line however it appears that this mixer has digital output only, and no digital input. Furthermore, the digital output is 2-channel SPDIF only, in either coax or optical form. This means that you can use it a 2-channel input device to the Wavecenter, but it can not directly receive audio coming back from the Wavecenter. In this case the mixer is always going to be the clock master.

Here are the basic steps to syncing up your Wavecenter to the mixer.
1. Connect either a coax or optical cable from the mixer to the Wavecenter Input.
2. Set the mixer to either 44.1 or 48khz sampling rate.
3. Open the Wavecenter control panel and select the clock source as Dig-In SPDIF. In the  pull-down menu on the right side (below the "Channels In Use") select Coax or Optical to match the connection you use.
4. The 3 boxes below Signal, FMT, and SLIP should all turn green to indicate that it is receiving a good signal.
5. configure your computer recording software to receive input from the Wavecenter S1:2 (SPDIF channels 1&2).

Those are the basics. Check with your software instructions for details on setting that up. For output you will have to either use another D>A converter, or use the computers built-in audio if it has it.

Feel free to let them know (politely) how great it would be to use an AlphaTrack with their product.  :-)

Probably not the way you would like. There are 3rd party translation programs like Bome's MIDI Translator that do a really good job of letting you set up your own mapping. But you wouldn't get any feedback from the app back into the AlphaTrack. ie. no fader motor , or display data.

Hi

I have had to re-install Alphatrack in Windows Vista and it shows up in the task bar running in Native mode.

When I open Cubase, it shows up as a Midi Device and can be activated.  But it is not working at all when I open a track.  Not lights, no volume bar movements, nothing, just the blue light but no readings in it, so I guess it is not working?

I notice it is not appearing in any of the plug-in lists and seem to remember when I first successfully installed Alphatrack that it was listed as a plug-in?

Should an Alphatrack plugin be listed?

I notice it exists as a plug-in in the cubase4/components menu, but not within Cubase itself?

Any suggestions?

I'm getting some strange behavior on my shiny new Tranzport when I try to adjust channel levels.  I can adjust the level of a channel, but when I switch to a different channel and try to adjust it, the level jumps to where I left the previous one.  For example:

Say track 1 is set to -10.0db, and track 2 is set to 0.0db.  With track 1 selected, I can adjust the level up and down normally, so I change it to -6.0db.  Now if I scroll over to track 2 and try to turn it up one notch, the level of track 2 jumps to -5.7db, rather than 0.3db as I would expect.  I can keep rotating the knob and eventually get it there, but I have to make a note of what the original volume was before I start adjusting it.

It's like it remembers the last adjusted value regardless of the fact it was from a different track.  I haven't confirmed yet if this happens when changing levels on busses or if the pan function acts this way as well.

Here are the specs on my system:
Dell E1705 laptop (Intel CoreDuo proc, 2GB RAM)
WinXP SP2
SONAR 6 Producer Edition (v6.2.1 update)
Tranzport drivers v1.4.1 (Tranzport icon appears in system tray)
Mackie Control Universal Pro (Tranzport is listed first in SONAR Control Surface config)

I haven't tried the 1.4.4 beta drivers yet, but I may do so.  All other functions seem to work fine, though I haven't used the punch or loop features yet.  Any ideas?

Thanks!

Jeremy

CS:Hello Jeremy,

very strange indeed, and something that it should not do with the drivers you have installed. I doubt very much that the problem is actually on the TranzPort end of things. That is not trying to pass the buck, its just because of the way Sonar and TranzPort interact. TranzPort is just a 'dumb' controller and doesn't retain any information about values in Sonar. Something on Sonar's end is transposing the fader values when the track change is made. So what could it be?

Well, I would begin by going back to Sonar's Control Surface setup and deleting the TranzPort entry altogether. Then relaunch Sonar and add it right back in again. Sometimes Sonar's settings get corrupted and cause weird problems.

If that doesn't do it try deleting Sonar's aud.ini and ttsseq.ini preference files and relaunching Sonar. You may have to reset your basic audio/midi settings but it will build new prefs files.

Let us know how you make out.

JeremyD wrote:

Well, the good news is that it's working great now -- I'm just not sure what I did.  I went through the MIDI and Control Surface config windows a few times (removing and re-adding items), so maybe that straightened it out.  I believe there were a few reboots involved as well.

Thanks for your explanation of how the Tranzport and Sonar interact -- very interesting.

I'll keep an eye out for future weirdness, but for the time being it seems fine.  I'm already enjoying the advantages of being wireless, so I'm sure it's going to get plenty of use.

Thanks again!  Time to go make music now...

CS:Hello Gothboy,

While I don't have a copy of Live Light here, I believe it does support full external control, and should work. One possibility might be if you have added custom MIDI programming for the Radium controller, and it is set to MIDI channel 1 like the AlphaTrack. While Live's MIDI Edit panel shows each device's MIDI Port it doesn't actually use that information to distinguish between devices, only the MIDI channel. In the case of Live, AlphaTrack is fixed on channel 1. So if this is the case, and you can set the Radium to a different MIDI channel, then you should be ok.

Hope that helps,

CS

CS:AlphaTrack doesn't show up by name in Live controller list because it is using Mackie Control emulation rather than a discrete plug-in like TranzPort. So use 'Mackie Control' with MIDI In and Out both set to 'AlphaTrack'.

Just disconnecting the Radium may not clear any custom settings that were created for it. In Live, open the 'Edit MIDI Map' option (CTRL+M) and clear any entries in the MIDI Mappings list on the left.

Ok, just because we haven't mentioned it here yet, you did select 'Live(MCU)' mode from the AlphaTrack Manager right? If you don't see that mode in the live then you may need to update your ALphaTrack driver.

Hi, I can't get my alphatrack to do more than play music. I'm running Logic Pro 8.0.1 on OSX 10.5.2.
I initially installed alphatrack 1.3.0 and replaced the bundle in the Logic Package with plug in version 1.1. I restarted my mac and plugged in the unit. At this point there seemed to be no recognition. The icon did not appear in the menu bar or in the control surfaces setup panel in logic. rebuilding defaults did nothing. Touching any or the controls caused Logic to play music like a normal midi keyboard.
So then I uninstalled 1.3.o and installed the original version from the CD. I returned the original plug in to Logic, restarted the Mac, plugged in the unit. I could now see the icon in the menu bar, but Logic wasn't yet a choice (as expected). I unplugged the unit, I reinstalled V1.3.0 and restarted. Logic was still not a choice in the drop down menu, and touching any of the controls on the unit caused Logic to play music like a normal midi keyboard. rebuilding defaults did nothing.
I down loaded v1.3.0 again, reinstalled, restarted, plugged in the unit selected logic which was now available from alphatrack manager. I started Logic, and the symptoms where the same as before, except now the fader motor will follow the fader in the mixer if I adjust it with the mouse.
So I closed Logic, unplugged the unit and put plug in v1.1 back into the Logic package. Restarted, selected logic in the alphatrack manager and started logic. rebuilding defaults did nothing. Touching any or the controls caused Logic to play music like a normal midi keyboard. The icon did not appear in the control surfaces setup panel, just a picture of a keyboard when I manually added it from the list.
I calibrated the unit at each of these steps, but this didn't help.
Please Help

CS:Hello Darren,

lets see if we can get you sorted out here. The fact that Logic is playing MIDI notes when you press buttons means that it knows the device is there but isn't sure what it is. This can be caused by several things.

First, you definitely want to be using the AlphaTrack V1.3.0 drivers and v1.1 Logic plug-in. Any other combination or earlier versions won't work right no matter what you try. Also, just in case you have more than one version of Logic on your computer, make sure you are installing the plug-in into the the version you are actually running. Also, be careful not to install it into an alias of the Logic icon.

Ok, now that that it out of the way, a few general Mac related things. First, use the Disk Utilities to 'Repair Permissions' on your hard drive. This a a good thing to do periodically regardless, but might help here. Also, go into your Mac Audio/MIDI Setup and create a 'New Configuration'. This will ensure the Mac is seeing the AlphaTrack correctly to begin with. If you have AlphaTrack connected via a USB hub it should be a powered hub, and try bypassing it to see if it is affecting the signal.

Also, and this is an important one, Mac OS10.5.2 has known problems with recognizing USB devices. Make sure you update your Mac OS to 10.5.3 or beyond!

Now go back and launch Logic. Go to Logic/preferences/MIDI and select "Reset all MIDI Drivers". You should now have an icon for AlphaTrack in the Logic Control Surface Setup, but don't worry if the picture is of a generic keyboard or the AlphaTrack. Also, if you have any MIDI or Instrument tracks, check that none of them have AlphaTrack listed as their MIDI input.

If you are still having problems let us know any other details you note and we'll try to help further. Also let us know if you have any other devices connected.

CS:ello zskylar,

Very simple really. Go to Logic/Preferences/Control Surfaces/Setup and delete the AlphaTrack icon. Then Logic won't look for it anymore as long as it isn't connected. If you want to properly remove the driver files from the Mac you should run the "Remover" routine that is included in the driver package.

Hello deejarau,

Make sure that you have updated to the latest TranzPort drivers from our website downloads page. Also, do you  have the Tracktion v2.1 update from Mackie?

You will also find the Tracktion 2.1 Guide at http://frontierdesign.com/download/pdf/ … zPort.pdf. This should give you all of the correct details for configuring the TranzPort with T2.1

Check these out and let us know if you are still having difficulties.

Ah, well that makes it a lot simpler.

Since we no longer have all of the old forum files to refer to (as the result of the server crash mentioned above) sometimes we just have to work through these issues again.

I'm not sure why you are having difficulty with the plug-in portion of the 64-bit version of the installer, but no problem, we can help with that.  If you send an email to support@frontierdesign.com and mention that you need the AlphaTrackCN64.dll and the registration instructions we will be glad to send that to you directly.

We may be updating the Cubase/Nuendo plug-in soon for other reasons so we will take a look at the installer code at the same time to see if we can spot any problems.

I've updated the Mac, I've changed the USB slot, and I've bouth an USB 2.0 card (IDE) to be sure ... nothing happen...
When I plug the Alphatrack, the LCD display switch on, the text "Alphatrack" appears...and disappears...the screen stays in blue (sic)...and nothing happens...

Is there anyone who can help me please ?

Thanks

CS:Hello bedonraoul,

I'm sure we can help. If the unit is working ok on the PC then it should work on the Mac as well. There are a few of things that you can check here, all Mac OS related issues. Specifically, start with the "BSD Subsystem". If you did a custom install of OS 10.3.9 and didn't select to install the BSD Subsystem then you will need to go back and add that piece. Without it your Mac won't see the AlphaTrack, just as you describe. If you did/do a full install of 10.3.9 then it should be there already.

If that is in place and you still don't see the ALphaTrack then try repairing permissions. This is another routine Mac thing that is good to do occasionally anyway. Open the Disk Utilities application, select your hadrdrive, and then select "Repair Permissions" It may take a couple minutes to run.

Finally, open your Mac Audio/MIDI Setup panel and check the MIDI page. Create a 'New Configuration' and check it again.

I suspect that one of these things will solve your problem but let us know how you make out regardless.

Well my story is similar, but in the other direction.

I came across a used Mackie Control for sale in town and contacted the fellow selling it. He mentioned that all he really needed was a single fader type solution, so I offered $200 plus my Alphatrack instead of the $400 he was asking for it. He took me up on it and I now had a nice 9 fader system with mucho buttons!

But after a week, I realized that I had made a big mistake. My workflow was so much more efficient with one hand on the mouse and one on the Alphatrack. Plus the Mackie was taking nearly half of my total desk space.

So, I sold the unit on Ebay, made my money back and purchased a new Alphatrack with my upgrade to Sonar 7. In the end I just about broke even, but I learned a valuable lesson. Sometimes more really is less.

Thought you would get a kick out of that.

CS:That's a great story Edgetone. Mackie Controls are cool too, and if that's what you are looking for they're hard to beat. But sometimes you really just need a few important controls without the distraction of all the rest. Glad to hear it all worked out in the end.

I seem to be running into a problem in Ableton Live with Alphatrack and Padkontrol.
What happens is Alphatrack works fine until I assign Padkontrol to trigger different scenes in Live's Session view. All I do is assign the pad's to trigger scenes using Live's midi assign view. What happens is once I assign them. Any tracks I add to the session afterwards get ignored by Alphatrack. Any suggestions?
Thanks

CS:Hello Dano,

Live doesn't distinguish devices between MIDI ports even though they display port information, only channels. Check which MIDI channel the Padkontrol is on. If it's on channel 1 then your custom mapping may be interfering with AlphaTrack.

Try reassigning the Korg to another channel and reprogramming your triggers.

My alphatrack only works correctly on the first 8 channels of my project.  All functions work fine for these channels.  When I select any channel higher than track 8 with my mouse the display on the Alphatrack will blink once but stay on the 1-8 track that it was on.  The fader and encoders under PAN will control the previous channel but when I select SEND the encoders will control the sends on the mouse selected channel.  AUTO seems to work as it should, as do all the transport controls.  I can use the track arrows to change the selected track on ableton but the alphatrack won't follow past track 8.  When a new project is loading Alphatrack's display will flash back and forth between track 1 and return A.  It will also flash this way when a track higher than 8 is selected, though it will go track1- returnA,track2-returnB,etc.  Untill there are no more returns then it will just flash intermittently.

I have tried this with my Korg Kontrol49 both connected and disconnected with all remote ports besides Alphatrack disabled.  Same results.  I have Live(MCU) on the Alphatrack selected before I open Ableton.  Ocassionally it will work for channels past 8 on a smaller project but if I add enough channels eventually it will show the same symptoms.  The template that I use most often has 38 tracks in it.

I just unistalled the drivers as per the instructions in the user guide and reinstalled.  Same results.  I'm at a loss with this right now.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Just noticed another strange thing.  When I am controlling tracks 1-8, abletons midi remote in and out indicator lights in the upper right corner are off unless I am moving a controller on the alphatrack.  When I highlight a track 9 or above the lights blink rapidly without anything being changed on the alphatrack.  This is without the session playing.

Ok here we go again!

Tried the AT with Sonar 6 PE, no problems.  It was able to map fine in a project with 20 tracks.

Then I disconnected all my peripherals(Saffire pro, Glyph harddrive, firewire pcmcia card, mouse/keyboard, Kontrol 49) so only thing connected to my laptop was the AT.

Opened a new project in Ableton.  The only midi ports available in preferences was the alphatrack, which I set up under control surfaces with mackie control and enabled the remote in and out, and the laptop's internal microsoft wavetable synth which was set to off.

I was able to load 20 audio tracks until the AT stopped mapping to them, then same exact symptoms as described earlier.  This was completely blank audio tracks.  Task Manager was showing 4% cpu usage and 450mb PF usage.  So CPU was just coasting.  Turning the audio engine on and off in ableton(set to MME to connect with the laptops internal soundcard since the saffire was disconnected) caused the AT's fader  to jump but didn't correct the problem.  Delay Compensation also did not effect anything this time.

I'm going to try installing the AT on a different USB port and see what happens.  BTW I'm not using any hubs.  Anybody have any other suggestions?

Thanks

EricC wrote:

Installed the AT on a new USB port, same problem.

So here's so more info on what's happening.  I start with a new project and start adding tracks.  When I hit somewhere around track 12-14 the AT's display starts to flash/glitch when I add a new track and stops mapping to any new tracks I make.  If I go back and select one of the lower numbered tracks it will then pickup the new tracks and I can add some more.  Once I hit 19-20 tracks it won't map to them anymore even if I select a lower number track.  This is with everything disconnected from the computer and minimal CPU/RAM usage.

Eric

EricC wrote:

Seems the trick is when adding tracks you need to add them from the left end of the session view and sort of "push" all the existing tracks down.  Then the AT sees them.  I was able to load 70 tracks and control then all fine.

I'd been adding the tracks from the right end of session view.  Weird.

Well, everything seems to be working now.  What seemed to finally make the difference was switching to pickup mode.  Not really sure why since the manual says it doesn't make a difference what its set to.  This has been a very weird problem, I really don't understand what was wrong or what I did to fix it but its working now so I'm happy!  The Alphatrack is really nice when its mapping everything.  All the controls for everything are super accessible.

CS:Hello Eric,

well thanks for taking the time to post over the weekend. Sorry to hear you had such a frustrating time, but happy to hear you found a solution that works. I haven't seen 'pickup' mode be effective before but then again I am not a Live expert, and there may be some scenario of factors that could make it necessary. Hopefully someone else will find your experiences helpful as well.

I have been using my Alphatrack now with Cubase Studio 4 since December 2007 and have been very happy with it since version 1.2 and latest Cubase plug in I have had no problems.
I use the Alphatrack just for mixer operations in Cubase eg. panning, eq, volume (I don't really use it for plug ins).
Recently the Alphatrack has stopped communicating with Cubase properly as it receives Midi data from Cubase (eg, slider moves when changing channel and display shows correct info) but will not send Midi data to Cubase (the buttons / slider etc. no do not control anything within Cubase).
I have checked all settings etc and can find no reason for this but I have recently updated to latest version of Cubase (4.1.3.583 from 4.1.2) and I have installed a Novation Nocturn which i plan to use for plug in control (not mixer control, i will continue to use Alphatrack for this).
Is it possible to use the Alphatrack and Nocturn at the same time?
Or is the Automap causing a conflict between the two?
Any thoughts anyone?

CS:Hello Joe,

well this is the second time I have heard this symptom in as many days, and both involving Novation Automap. Hmmmmmm...... getting suspicious.

I have the same version of Cubase loaded so I guess I'll have to break down and install this Automap stuff to see what implodes.  I'll check it out. Wish me luck.

CS

CS:Ok Joe,
I have spent half the day updating and trying to make sense of this Automap Universal 2 stuff with a Remote SL we have in the office, but so far don't have it working with Cubase. (No offense Novation, but the setup for this is really hard to follow).

Anyhow, in looking at the new Automap application it allows the user to select In and Out MIDI ports and channels. Can you tell me what you have selected there, and how you have it set up in Cubase? I'll try to emulate what you have.

CS

Joe Purnell wrote:

I have the Automap set up With Midi out off and Midi in off.
This way it communicates with Cubase fine (don't know how or why cos this suggests that all input and output is off?).
I cannot figure out exactly what these Midi in and out ports are used for, will read the maual more thoroughly.

CS:Ok, I finally got my setup working, Remote SL and AlphaTrack together. It appears that the secret was updating the AutomapServer software from Novation to version 2.0.1188. The previous version would hijack all device MIDI drivers and render them useless. Check here for the update. http://mail.focusrite.com/beta/remote_sl/

Let us know if this doesn't do it for you.

This seems to have cured the problem thanks

Hello Matthew,

Sorry, but I'm guessing not as long as the AlphaTrack is defined as a control surface in your Device Setup. To the best of my knowledge the input transformer only applies to devices selected as musical input sources, not control surfaces. Otherwise there would be a clash between the devices plug-in file and the transformer.

If you didn't add AT to your Device Setup and instead treated it as a generic MIDI input device then you probably could set it up, but you would loose all of its normal functionality.

Im considering the Alphatrack to use with Reason and Logic 8. If i am using both in Rewire mode will the Alphatrack operate each DAW independently or will both DAW's see the inputs simultaneously (for example will both track change request take place in both DAWs at the same time). I would expect and hope control is independent for each DAW in focus. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

CS:Hello icerichie,

Well, sometimes things just don't work the way we would all like. Unfortunately currently neither Logic nor Reason have the ability to gracefully hand off a controller to another program, even when moved to the background. We would certainly take advantage of that if we could, but for now you would have to assign it to one or the other. Currently, in order to accomplish this a device would have to declare itself as 2 separate devices and be toggled between them.

Sorry,

Hi there,

I'm having a bit of a problem with AlphaTrack in Cubase SX3 (1.944 build)

If I have a soft synth loaded into a midi track, notes get played everytime I move a fader or knob on the Alphatrack.

Any Ideas - very irritating.

Thanks

CS:Hello cwmbrancon,

No problem, easy fix. Go into the Device Setup and look for the "All MIDI Inputs" setting. Make sure that AlphaTrack IS NOT enabled as an All MIDI Device. That setting is only for devices that you want to trigger audio with. Also, check your MIDI track input setting to make sure they are not set to AlphaTrack.

That should do it

There shouldn't be any needed key-press tricks for it to follow. I am not aware of any other settings that should inhibit track selection, unless you have some unknown MIDI filter or pref setting.

Does this behavior apply to both the Project and Mixer views? (AlphaTrack only works with Mixer 1).
Does it follow in either direction? ie. select track with AT, selected track highlights on screen, vrs., select track with mouse, selected track appears on AT.

ok, so this is a first for me. I don't recall ever seeing this symptom before, but that just makes it a better challenge. ;)

There are a couple ways we can approach this to find out if the problem is with the AlphaTrack itself, or something going on in Cubase (like some unexpected MIDI filtering or other preference setting).

As long as the AlphaTrack control panel is set to "Native" mode it will physically generates the same set of MIDI messages from its fader, regardless of the application that is running. If the fader behaves correctly in any other program, then it should also behave correctly in Cubase. So if you have any other compatible DAW application to test it with then you could quickly confirm AT's MIDI data output.

If you don't already have another program then you can do the same test using either MIDI-OX (Windows) or MIDI Monitor (Mac). Both of these are free downloads from their respective sites, and make great tools to troubleshoot various MIDI problems. With these you can compare the output with what is spec'ed in the AlphaTrack Native Mode doc at http://frontierdesign.com/download/pdf/ … e_1.0.pdf.

If the fader's MIDI output isn't correct then perhaps it is a physical problem and we can go that route.

A couple other things you can try:

- clearing out your Cubase Prefs files.
- if on a Mac, try "Repairing Permissions" and then creating a "New Configuration" in the Mac Audio/MIDI Setup panel.

Check these things out and let us know what you find. If you are still having troubles we'll go from there. I'm sure we can get to the bottom of this.

So it sounds like you have the basic driver installed and running ok.

Here is the next important thing to check. When you are in the Cubase Device Setup, and click on the "+" symbol in the upper left corner to add AlphaTrack as a new device, does AlphaTrack appear in the list of available devices?

If yes, then select it and set its MIDI In/Out to itself.

If no, then the AlphaTrackCN.dll plugin file may not be located in the correct Components folder. The path should be something like:
" c:\Program Files\Steinberg\Cubase5\Components"

let us know.
