No volume control in Win XP sp3

I recently reinstalled my OS back to XP sp3.  I downloaded the new drivers and it installs.  Device manager says it is working.  it is working, but I have no volume control.  No icon for volume control on the task bar.  Under Sound the Device Volume area is grayed out ...  any thoughts?
